Winter Deck Protection: Tips to Prevent Snow and Ice Damage

Bruce Corser • January 9, 2025

Winter in New England is a time when most people flock indoors and tend to forget about their outdoor decks, leaving them exposed to the harsh elements. At Patriot Fence Crafters, we believe your deck is an investment worth protecting.  With proper care and attention, your deck can survive the cold months in great condition, ready for spring and summer enjoyment. Here are some essential tips to care for your deck this winter.

1. Shovel Gently

  • Use a Plastic Shovel: Metal shovels or even plastic ones with sharp edges can scratch, gouge, or damage the surface of your deck. Choose a plastic shovel with a blunt edge. This type of shovel is softer on the material and less likely to cause harm.
  • Follow the Grain: Always push snow in the direction of the boards rather than across them. This reduces the risk of catching edges or damaging the wood or composite materials.

2. Avoid Salt

  • Skip Rock Salt or De-Icers with Sodium Chloride: Standard rock salt and other de-icing products often contain harsh chemicals that can cause discoloration, corrode metal fasteners, and degrade wooden or composite decks over time. Instead, opt for products designed specifically for use on decks. These are gentler on both wood and composite materials, offering effective ice control without causing damage.
  • Rinse Residue: After the ice melts, rinse any remaining product off your deck to avoid long-term buildup.
  • Consider Sand: For added traction without the risk of chemical damage, sprinkle sand lightly over icy areas. This provides grip without harming the deck’s surface.

3. Be Mindful of Weight

  • Clear Snow Frequently:  Don’t let snow pile up too high. Heavy snow can place undue stress on your deck, especially on older or weathered structures.
  • Inspect After Heavy Snow: Once the snow is cleared, check the deck for signs of sagging, cracking, or shifting, which could indicate stress-related damage.

Why Proper Snow Removal Matters

Improper snow and ice management can lead to costly repairs down the road. Scratches, discoloration, and moisture damage can compromise the integrity and appearance of your deck.
