Spring Cleaning Fence Checklist

When the winter finally ends and makes way for warm and balmy spring weather, there’s quite a bit for you to do! Other than jumping in puddles and digging out your short sleeved shirts, it’s also time for spring cleaning. If you love to keep your home immaculate and organized, then you’re probably excited by the prospect of a full spring cleaning to meet a new season with a freshly prepared interior. But you can’t forget to spring clean the outside of your home either, especially your fence!

The most popular types of fence have quickly become vinyl and aluminum because they’re low maintenance, decorative, inexpensive, and durable. Since vinyl and aluminum are not porous surfaces, they don’t absorb moisture or other elements that would diminish its quality. However, no fence is 100 percent hands-off, so even vinyl and aluminum require some spring cleaning effort to clear off the dirt, algae, and grime that has accumulated.

The process is simple and won’t require you to cancel all of your weekend plans. Begin by washing away loose debris with a hose, gentle cleaning soap, and soft brush. Once everything is washed away, the more stubborn marks and stains will become evident. Such stains may require outdoor bleach to remove, but make sure to test the bleach on a small portion of your fence before applying to all areas in need.

If you have a wood fence rather than vinyl or aluminum, your spring cleaning process will look slightly different. Since wood is at risk of warping and rotting, inspect the length of your fence and check for any damages. Pressure washing between 500-800 psi with cold water can do wonders to clear off grime and uncover the beautiful wood underneath.

Wood fences also need extra protection from the wind and rain, so now it a good time to seal or re-seal the wood if it’s in need. With just a small amount of work, your fence will look like it was just installed last week.

Fence maintenance needs:

Inspect Post Structures

Ensure that the structures of fence posts are sturdy and secure. During extreme temperature fluctuations, ice, snow and the weight of other debris can affect the structural soundness of fence posts. Whether because of the fence material itself or due to the loose surrounding ground, if left these issues are unattended to fierce spring winds can send your fence tumbling over. At Patriot Fence Crafters, our valued team can work with various fencing materials for gate fencing to split rail, ornamental and another fencing. No matter what kind of fence you have, be sure that it is structurally sound.

Check for Deterioration

Around the base of fencing where insects, moisture and other weather factors fester, deterioration can occur. When deterioration of your fencing material happens, the fence itself is neither fully intact nor structurally sound as a result. This can lead to several material, structural, safety and other issues which could be preventable with the proper fence maintenance. From wood fences to PVC vinyl fencing, Patriot Fence Crafters will help you to maintain your fence to meet your needs.
